Choosing FPGA or ASIC: The Financial Argument-August 18, 2009 |
Financial considerations will increasingly impact managers' choices of the type of device to be used in implementing a new product. To be sure financial considerations are not the only item to be studied in such a decision. I will examine others in upcoming articles. Yet, highly price sensitive market behavior is making cost a primary consideration in product planning and development.
Dylan McGrath in an article in EE Times posted here reported that the market research firm Gartner Inc. found that new design projects are choosing FPGA instead of ASIC by a factor of 30 to 1. One direct result is that ASIC design starts are expected to drop by 22% in 2009, following a decline of ASIC projects completions of 9.5% in 2008.
In considering the profitability of a proposed product a manager must look at a number of factors including: development and deployment cost, time-to-market, and manufacturing costs.
