Qualcomm Inc has agreed to acquire Alphawave IP Group plc, a London-listed semiconductor company, in a US$2.4 billion all-cash deal aimed at strengthening its position in high-speed connectivity chips for artificial intelligence (AI) and data centre applications.

The acquisition positions Qualcomm to better compete in the booming data infrastructure and AI hardware space.

The deal, announced on June 9, values Alphawave at 183 pence per share, with shareholders also given the option to receive 0.01662 Qualcomm shares for each Alphawave share. The Alphawave board has unanimously recommended the offer.

Alphawave specialises in high-performance semiconductors used in the backbone of AI systems, including those powering technologies like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

“This deal expands Qualcomm’s capabilities in next-gen data centre connectivity, a critical enabler of the AI revolution,” the company said in its statement.
