Taiwanese foundry operator Vanguard International Semiconductor is considering building a new factory to meet climbing demand, especially related to technologies including fingerprint recognition for smartphones.
Chairman and President Leuh Fang has alluded to the possibility in such venues as Thursday's earnings conference here. VIS -- a group member of global market leader. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. -- will face extremely tight supply in 2018, according to Fang.
VIS has used mainly silicon wafers 200mm in diameter but is thinking about deploying equipment for the more efficient 300mm size at the possible new plant. Such details as the time frame and the price tag have not yet been addressed.
