Cumulative subsidies reach 22 trillion won as Japan aims to challenge TSMC, Samsung with 2-nanometer trial production by year-end
The Japanese government has decided to provide an additional 631.5 billion yen (approximately 5.9 trillion Korean won) in subsidies to Rapidus, a foundry (semiconductor contract manufacturing) company it is fostering to reclaim the "lost 30 years" of its domestic semiconductor industry. Rapidus was established in 2022 with investments from major Japanese companies, including Toyota, Sony, and SoftBank, under the leadership of the Japanese government. With this additional subsidy, the cumulative subsidies received by Rapidus have increased to 2.354 trillion yen (approximately 22 trillion Korean won).
